I have always wanted a career which would involve helping and improving other people’s quality of lives. I studied Health and Social Care for my A- levels, as I knew this would give me more knowledge and help me understand the important aspects in caring for people. During my two year course I learnt about many different areas of the health and social care field, which involved subjects such as Health Promotion, Psychology, Care Practice, Child Care, Communication, Legislations, Equality and Rights. While I was studying my A- levels I was a voluntary worker for Ballinascreen Early Years which is a local playschool where I live. I got to interact with the young children and help them to develop their own potential skills. It involved me planning, preparing and delivering curriculum through different types of play activities such as painting, drawing, reading and outside in the play area. I also provided the children with the appropriate level of support in which they needed in a safe and caring environment. I found this work very enjoyable as I have a love for children and helping other people.
Also, two nights a week I stay with an elderly relative who suffers from Alzheimers which is a mental health disorder. It involves me doing jobs such as washing and dressing the individual and helping out with daily chores. I often sit and take time to listen and talk to the individual which is very important to do with this type of illness. I also often have provided emotional support through difficult and stressful life changes to both the individual and her other family members. This job has given me experience in working with an individual with a mental health illness which can be a difficult job at times. It has increasingly improved my communication skills, patience and my own initiative. As a result, it has lead me to become more aware of my own values and beliefs whilst showing respect for other people and theirs.
After completing my A-levels I went to Queens University were I completed my Honours Degree in Sociology. Sociology looks at society and the problems which can occur within it. Throughout my three years of studying Sociology I covered many different areas and issues which are existing in our society today. These included child abuse, domestic violence, religion conflict, drugs and homelessness.

After completing my degree I became a voluntary worker for the charity organisation ‘Extern’ at weekends and on holidays. Extern works with children, adults and communities affected by social exclusion throughout Ireland. The age group I work with are 8-16 year olds. I work with children who suffer from ADHD, have alcohol problems, many have been the victims of child abuse in the past, many have been involved in crime and unfortunately some of the children have not been provided with the care in love in which they need due to their parents suffering mental illnesses or drug and alcohol problems. Working with Extern, involves me attending several weekends away throughout the year with the children, completing exercises and carrying out various activities. Some of these activities include woodwork, hill walking, cliff jumping, water trampolining and many more. We also take the children on day trips to various places, for example, the zoo, paint balling or it may just be for something to eat and the cinema. Often some of the children need one to one talks if they have any problems or are going through a rough or emotional time in their lives. I also take part in the one to one’s. Talking to children and understanding their problems at such a young age can sometimes be very difficult, although I enjoy this part of my job very much and find it rewarding. By carrying out one to ones has taught me a lot about myself as a person. Patience is vitally important and providing the child with security, especially if it is a sensitive issue the child is talking about. It has increased my communication skills and also has lead to a growth in my confidence and self esteem. Working with Extern means that you are working alongside many other professionals such as youth support workers and social workers.I feel I have a lot of experience in working with children and feel their safety is paramount. I am will to further develop my skills within this area with opportunities which arise.

I also completed risk assessments and monitored risk and mental state of clients. I feel I am a good team member and highly motivated to perform and succeed to the best of my ability. I am able to readily establish a rapport with clients through specific group work such as anxiety management, self-esteem and confidence building, creative activities and lifestyle groups. I feel I have excellent planning skills through providing an Occupational Therapy service, and also maintaining Occupational Therapy and multidisciplinary records. Within my recent post I would occasionally work flexible hours to ensure therapeutic intervention is provided to ensure the client’s needs are met, which shows I am therefore willing to work flexible hours including weekends.I have a lot of experience working with children as an Occupational Therapist, and I have been babysitting children from I was 14 years of age. I work well with children and I am a very responsible person and the safety of children is always paramount with me.
