Lauren Amalie ~ Toowong

I am currently studying for a Graduate Diploma in Younger Years Education at University. I feel very enthusiastic about teaching as I have a desire to help others learn and create experiences. I strive for self-development, both my own and others, and want to help children achieve this. I enjoy being part of a child's crucial development and wish to have a direct influence on this.
I feel that a job in childcare this would be perfect for me as I have always loved children. I went to a child minders from the age of six weeks, and so grew up with children of various ages around me. From a very young age I remember looking after the younger children and helping them learn. I believe that this experience fuelled my desire to teach, a desire that has remained throughout my life. At the age of fourteen I began to babysit and got a regular job three nights a week looking after, in the end, three children aged between five weeks and ten years of age and so each needed a different type of interaction. This gave me great responsibility from a young age and helped teach me how to interact with children of all ages. I carried out this job for 6 years and built up a great relationship with the family. I have also had a nannying job which involved picking up children from school, running then to activities, making dinner, bathing, putting to bed and light household chores.
I possess good communication and leadership skills, both with children and adults, which have been developed through my many extracurricular activities. I have also learnt good time-management and organisational skills through juggling having part time jobs, volunteering and academic work successfully.
I was a helper in Brownies for seven years, which involved teaching and managing groups of children. I loved seeing the delight that the children got from these activities and took great pleasure in being a part in creating that joy. Through this I helped run a four-day camp and also achieved my Young Guider Award. These jobs took great patience as they involved thirty inquisitive and excited children, all hankering for my attention and time. They also allowed me to develop my creative skills by taking charge and organising various art and craft activities.
I undertook a yearlong course to become a Community Sports Leader, which involved helping and working with groups of children and teaching them sport. This furthered my development of teaching skills as well as gave me more experience with interacting with children. At this time I also volunteered to help teach children to read and develop their skills at my local primary school.
I also volunteered at a disabled swimming class for five years where I was responsible for caring for, training and entertaining a range of different ages and different levels of disability. This work in particular required quick thinking, as I had to adapt lesson plans and activities on the spot as necessary, and taught me the importance versatility. It also helped me realise that, in order for children to reach their full potential, it is essential that they are each considered as an individual and their varying needs are accommodated to. This passion has also caused me to volunteer at an organisation called Mind, where I helped people suffering from mental health problems produce art and crafts, as well as a cancer Hospice, Martin House, where I am interested in their use of Art Therapy. These experiences, among others, have allowed my empathy to others evolve in a positive manner.
At school, I was Drama Prefect, which involved writing, directing and producing a play and running a weekly drama club for younger pupils. I feel this was the most challenging experience I have had working within a team due to its longevity. We had to work together as a team in order to achieve successful classes and end result. We had to learn to express our own ideas and feelings, whilst listening to each other. It was a lot of hard work, and took up a lot of our time, but I feel we successfully achieved what we set out to do.
These experiences have all increased my interpersonal, organisational and directive skills as well as developing my patience when working with young children. These skills have also been developed with my University position as a RAG Organiser in which I organized and managed a charity hitch. Through RAG I also visited Uganda to help build schools and teach underprivileged children. I have also worked part time from the age of fifteen, which has taught me discipline and a sense of dependability.
