I have been working in Childcare since I was 14 years old, I was a mothers helper for 6 children ages 0-8years old for 3 years, In 2010 I was offered a fulltime traineeship at Treetops Pre-School in Warriewood with children 3-5 years old where I studied and completed my Cert 3 in Children's Services mid-2011, after completing my contract I moved onto my current job at a Long day care and Pre-school in Seaforth working with ages 0-6 years old.

Hello there, my name is Nicholas, but throughout our correspondence you can call me Nick. I have not long moved back down to Manly from the hinterland of the Mid North Coast where I was studying Permaculture and Sustainability and carrying out much needed renovations to my investment property. Please allow me to introduce myself and provide some insight into who I am, what I do and briefly outline my experience working with children.

As a young boy I helped out at a pre-school with my grandmother, and then later volunteered in the children’s ward at the Coffs Harbour Base Hospital. I soon began babysitting/nannying in high school, primarily for a professional couple Will and Heather to enable me to save and travel. Heather is a busy family law specialist and is quite active in the community. The boys, Jock and Angus, were just 6 months and 2 years of age respectively when I began taking care of them, and so they grew up considering me a family member of sorts, still inviting me to their eisteddfods, school plays and performances today. Whilst Angus and Jock were able to play and ‘be kids’, I developed a manner of relating to them such that we communicated maturely. This proved to be incredibly beneficial to Angus and Jock’s development, both now showing social skills and maturity beyond their years. It also meant that I was able to say ‘that’s enough’ and the boys would directly respond owing to the mutual respect we developed.

Over the years I kept a journal for Will and Heather; lyrical, comical, poetic and at times illustrative. Each evening when they returned from an event I presented them with an A4 booklet filled with stories, quotes and activities from the day, afternoon or evening. We’d put the kettle on and while the boys slept we would chuckle around the kitchen table over the things they’d come out with, queries they’d forwarded or comical things they had done. I have the collection safely stored away with photos and will present the package and tell some of the stories for the boys’ 21st birthdays. The boys had an inclination towards gaming and television but I preferred to engage them in other activities that would develop their coordination, motor skills, and creativity. When they were a little older I would occasionally meet the family at the beach and send Will and Heather off for some much needed time together. I would then take the boys with our little backpacks and a picnic on an adventure over the headlands, exploring, climbing, making up games with driftwood and collected items from the shore.

When I was last living in Manly in 2006 I worked as a ‘manny’ (male nanny) for Robyn, a single mother who is a Doctor/Naturopath and owns a busy practice on the northern beaches. Robyn was extremely run down at the time and was in need of support in the many facets of home life. I worked 4-5 hours each evening, Monday-Friday for Robyn for approximately 5-6 months, up until she showed strong signs of recovery and I left for Central America to travel for a year.

Robyn has three children who were at the time twelve, fifteen, and seventeen (or thereabouts) so didn’t require babysitting, but rather sound support, reliability and organising. I picked the kids up from school, cleaned the house, prepared meals for a very health conscious mother, designed, planted out and maintained the gardens, ran errands, washed and shopped and generally just filled the shoes of a … house husband… big brother… father…?

I am 29 years old, active, health conscious and spirited. To keep fit I like to swim, surf, free-dive, hike, take Pilates classes and ride my bike. I have studied at Griffith and Southern Cross Universities in the past, focusing primarily in the arts, film, photography, humanities and design. Growing up on 130 acres left me with quite a strong connection to the land and travels often led me to remote villages where I learnt more about self-sufficiency and further deepened a growing interest in sustainability. This I think is what led me to study Permaculture.

I have just recently graduated from Landscape Design and horticultural studies and have been working for a local company doing design, costing and estimating. After gaining further experience in this industry I intend on doing post grad studies in town planning and urban design and taking my interest in sustainability and design to a larger audience and begin to affect public space.
